CITATION AND BIBLIOGRAPHIC REFERENCE STANDARDS

The digital journal Márgenes follows the American Psychological Association (APA, 7th edition 2020) standard. Reference documents must match the citation in the text and will be ordered alphabetically. The editor may omit from this list references that are not cited in the text. PDF

For citations and references

The APA style separates citations into two main classes: textual citations (short and long) and paraphrased citations; secondary citations or citations of citations are also used.

Some examples are provided below.

Short, narrative, and direct or textual citation (up to 40 words), is always written in quotation marks and it includes author, year, and page where the citation is found. In this type of citation, the period is placed at the end, after the source.

Example:

According to the concept given by the ISO 9001 standard of 2013, "(...) a service is the result of a process" (p. 7).

Short, parenthetical, and direct or textual citation (up to 40 words), is always written in quotation marks.

Example:

“The postgraduate educational process is inherently complex and dynamic, where the relationship between education and development is expressed" (Addine Fernández, 2023, p. 2).

Long citations with more than 40 words are written in a separate paragraph, without quotation marks, with a ½ inch. These are the so-called block quotes. The period is placed at the end of the quote and before the parenthesis.

The use of citation in an htlm document (without pagination) is placed as follows. The number of paragraphs must be counted.

Example:

Cristo Sosa et al. (2019), state that:

The system of educational influences aimed at stimulating pedagogical vocation in students, their enrollment in                   related degree programs, and their retention and development within these  programs, must include assisting                    students in the complex task of defining their life Project. (para.   26)

The use of paraphrased citations, to which only the author and the year of publication are placed as follows:

Example:

Sherrill & Hutzler (2013), consider it adapted or modified, to be as appropriate for a person with a disability as for a                      person without a disability.

Citation of a citation when there is no access to the original source.

Example:

According to Blume Fortini (1998), as cited in Olano García (2006), the Constitution:

(…)  can be understood as the fundamental normative instrument for the objective implementation of the                            regulation of the exercise of political power. It contains the basic rules for  the balance between those who govern              and the governed establishing limits and control on power of the former, and rights and obligations for the latter.             (p.139)

How to present figures, tables, graphs, photographs, drawings, diagrams, and illustrations or other non-textual representation included in the article.

  • They are placed centered.
  • The word Table or Figure and its number are placed in bold.
  • In the case of tables, below, on a separate line, the title is placed in italics.
  • The table is inserted, where the only visible borders should be the top and bottom of the table, below the column headers and above the column totals.
  • In the case of a figure or image, the title must be placed at the foot, i.e., below the figure.
  • Below, a Note is written if the title is not sufficiently explanatory.
  • The phrase: taken from, is used to specify the source. The author placed there (whether individual or corporate) must appear in the references.
  • When the table and/or figure is of your own creation, it is not necessary to add any type of copyright declaration.
  • Graphs, maps, photographs, drawings, diagrams, and illustrations should be named with the word figure and numbered consecutively with Indo-Arabic numerals, for example (Figure 1) and include a caption specifying the source. Refer to them directly in the text, for example (see Figure 1).
  • The numbers and symbols used should not be smaller than the size used in the rest of the text (Arial 12).

Photographs and images must be of optimal quality and with the following technical characteristics:

  • Images must be sent in TIFF (.TIF), JPEG (.JPEG), or BMP digital format. Images should be in RGB (16 million colors) or CMYK format, with a minimum resolution (up to an ideal of 300 dots per inch).
  • In the case of JPEG files, compression should be minimal (maximum quality).
  • Images may be inserted inside Word files, but for orientation purposes, meaning that if they are inserted, they must also be sent as separate images, with a correlative name and numbering (Figure 1, Figure 2, etc.). The names of the graphic files should be the numerals indicating the figure number (i.e., the figure number and the extension, for example: 1.tif, 2.tif, etc.).

Formulas and Mathematical Expressions

  • Formulas and mathematical expressions must be written in black font, in MS Word, and must have adequate spacing between them. Formulas will be numbered correlatively and in round parentheses at the far right of the corresponding line.
  • It is important that the meaning and the units used for each term in the expressions are fully defined. Use the International System of Units (SI).
  • Words in another language and the symbols of constants, variables, and functions, in Latin or Greek letters, included in the equations, must be in italics. Mathematical symbols and numbers are not in italics. These symbols must be identified immediately after the equation. Decimals should be separated with a comma (,) or a period (.); thousands and millions should be separated by spaces. Use the units, dimensions, and symbols of the SI.
