THE CUBAN ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL MODEL: STRUCTURAL HETEROGENEITY WITH A PREVALENCE OF SOCIAL OWNERSHIP
Abstract
The essay addresses an issue that, although it has a long history in economic theory, in the Cuban case has received special theoretical-practical attention since the 1990s, acquiring a greater connotation in the context of the process of updating the Cuban Economic and Social Model for Socialist Development. Its objective is focused on contributing to the systematization of a group of transformations in ownership relations within the framework of the aforementioned process. The heterogeneous socio-economic structure with a predominance of social ownership characterizing the transition to socialism under underdevelopment conditions is dealt with as the theoretical assumption. As to the main conclusions, the following can be mentioned: the changes in ownership relations represent the central axis structuring and coordinating the updating process of the Cuban model. Additionally, within the framework of such process, a heterogeneous socioeconomic structure has emerged including the society-wide public social ownership, as a fundamental form, coexisting with other increasingly relevant ones such as cooperative ownership and small and medium-size private enterprises.
