Abstract

Local development as a concrete historical process has a multidisciplinary character. Popular and traditional culture is one of the dimensions of local development that, with the adequate treatment, can be used for the benefit of individuals. Concerning the theoretical and methodological foundations, the sources of scientific and technical information supporting the role of popular and traditional culture in local development are deemed insufficient. This paper´s objective is to identify the theoretical aspects indicating a nexus between local development and popular and traditional culture. The theoretical principles encompassing popular and traditional culture and local development are outlined. In addition, some valuable ideas for encouraging local development form popular and traditional culture are proposed. As to conclusions, the following can be mentioned: the levels of development are a fragmented approach to social processes which are determined by the conditions of the subjects that generate it; the local dimension of development refers to a geographical connotation; various dimensions intervene in local development processes, such as popular and traditional culture.
